The two rites are changes in the state of being, from a symbolic death leading to rebirth. These are changes of state and not of degree. They are part of long traditions, but can be accomplished freely and individually.

Rites of passage are changes in social status throughout the life of the natural being, particularly at the threshold of major transformations: birth – adult – parent – grandparent – death. They therefore structure the social organization of a society and designate a social place for individuals.

The initiation rites represent the change from the natural being to the spiritual being. The being who has undergone an initiation becomes initiated. They can possibly designate the incorporation of an individual into a social or religious group.

Rites of passage are necessary, ubiquitous and visible in traditional societies around the world. These are stages that all members of a society must go through at a certain age. Initiatory rites are desired, selective and discreet in initiatory societies around the world. These are particular initiations which can be undertaken at all ages.

The rite of passage is a new phase of existence. The initiation rite is a new relationship to existence.

Everyone is destined to become fully adults, then parents and grandparents. But only certain people are destined to become initiates.

Rites of passage often take the form of various ceremonies or trials. Our modern society has practically eradicated them all. There remain some traces or ersatz, such as military service for men. Women cross these thresholds through their biology: the appearance of the first period, motherhood and menopause.

The initiation rites structuring initiatory societies remain reserved for members. But during their life, everyone can experience moments that bring out the spiritual being, without any belonging to groups: initiatory crisis, spiritual awakening, synchronicity, paranormal event… These moments, by shaking the consciousness, act like initiatory rites.
